Transcendence captures a moment of quiet withdrawal; the figure seemingly caught between the tangible world and somewhere beyond it. Her gaze turns away from us, while the loosely folded arms and pale, almost dissolving dress give her a curious combination of presence and distance.

Painted with a deliberately restrained palette, the softness of the figure emerges from deeper passages of olive, umber and muted gold. Areas are allowed to remain unresolved, with the weave of the canvas and movement of the brush becoming part of the image, while the greater definition of the face draws the eye back to the sitter.

The result is less a conventional portrait than an evocation of an inward moment: still, private and just beyond our reach.
